Mawhinney's occupies a long-established butcher's premises at 110-114 Frances Street in Newtownards town centre, trading as Mawhinney Family Butchers Ltd. Sam Jordan has run the shop as proprietor since 1996, having started there as a schoolboy and trained as a butcher under the previous owners. The Mawhinney name has been linked to butchery in the town since at least the 1940s, when Edward Mawhinney kept a shop nearby, with relatives running separate butchers in Comber, Portaferry and Kircubbin. The counter sells fresh beef, lamb and pork alongside home-made pies, sausage rolls and lasagnes prepared on the premises, plus a small grocery range of vegetables, milk and bread. It serves the Ards peninsula and surrounding villages as a single trading address rather than a chain.
