Rockpool Cafe and Restaurant occupies a corner of The Square in Cullen, the coastal town that gave Cullen skink its name. Steve and Carrie McDonald gave up careers in nursing to open the café in October 2011, and Steve still bakes the plain, cheese and fruit scones fresh each morning. The menu runs from breakfasts and soups through to a specials board that changes daily, usually built around fresh local seafood, alongside the restaurant's own version of Cullen skink. Tray bakes and cakes line the counter for takeaway or eating in at the scrubbed pine tables. The café is small and often full at weekends, so telephone bookings are recommended. It trades Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, closing on Mondays.
