Siop Y Pentan has traded from the Market Precinct in Carmarthen since 1972, run as a family business through two generations. The shop's shelves mix new Welsh-language and English fiction with second-hand titles, alongside lovespoons, Welsh pottery and greetings cards printed in Welsh for occasions from birthdays to bereavements. Staff are expected to know the stock well enough to recommend a book by conversation alone, and regulars are often greeted by name. The shop supports Welsh-language publishing directly, stocking small-press poetry and children's titles that larger chains do not carry, and it takes wholesale orders from schools and Welsh-medium education projects. Trade beyond the shop counter, including a mail-order service, has kept the business viable as passing footfall in the precinct has thinned over the years.
