Sound Knowledge occupies two floors at Hughenden Yard in Marlborough, run by Roger Mortimer since 1995. The ground floor stocks new vinyl and CDs across genres, with a specialist ordering service for titles not held in stock. Upstairs, a loft space reached by a spiral staircase hosts in-store performances; acts who have played there include Ed Sheeran, Tom Odell and Bombay Bicycle Club, among more than a hundred live sessions to date. The shop takes part in Record Store Day each year and belongs to the Dinked collective of independent record retailers. Mortimer, who grew up in Melksham, worked at record shops in Bath for over a decade before opening his own store, which continues to trade from its original Marlborough premises.
