An independent charity — not the council — has run Salisbury's museum since its Victorian founding, and it occupies the Grade I listed King's House in the Cathedral Close. The Wessex Gallery, opened in 2014, holds one of Europe's great collections of Stonehenge-country archaeology, around two and a half thousand objects deep; a £5.1m redevelopment added three more permanent galleries — Salisbury history, ceramics, natural history — in July 2024. A small paid staff runs it with more than two hundred volunteers behind them, inside the Wessex Museums partnership of accredited independents.
