William Main & Sons built the mill in 1880 to grind grain; descendants of the family rescued it from dereliction in the early nineties, and Michael Fox opened the Gallery Café inside on Valentine's Day 1995 — he and Deborah Fox bought the whole site a decade later and have run it since. The mill now calls itself the south of England's largest independent gallery, with a main exhibition floor, around fifteen working artists' studios, workshop space and the café that started it all, which marked thirty years in 2025. Exhibitions turn over monthly; the studios keep their own doors.
