Arniston House

East Lothian & Midlothian · SCO

NT 3302 5951Gorebridge · East Lothian & MidlothianSurveyed

The Dundas family have held Arniston since 1571. The present house is William Adam's, commissioned in 1724 and built from 1726, and the family still lives in it — Mrs Dundas-Bekker leads the tours herself, which run from May to September. Inside there are paintings by Henry Raeburn and Alexander Nasmyth, period furniture and china, and the family's own archive; two Dundas ancestors sat as Presidents of the Court of Session. The house is a member of Historic Houses.
