Bud Garden Centre opened in April 2011 on Burnage Lane, after founders Brenda and Severine cleared a site of derelict fencing, asbestos sheds and a twenty-five-year stockpile of old plant pots and garden chemicals. The pair had met in 2009 working at a community garden centre elsewhere in Manchester before setting up on their own. Severine left the business in 2015, since when Brenda has run it alone. Bud specialises in peat-free growing: its bedding plants, herbs, vegetable plants and potted bulbs are raised in peat-free compost, largely sourced from small UK nurseries that share the same approach, alongside organic seeds and sustainable gardening sundries. The centre operates from this single plot in Burnage, South Manchester, with no other branches, and remains one of the few specifically peat-free garden centres in the conurbation.
