The shop at 24 Catherine Street was built as a butcher's premises in 1904 and has traded as a butcher continuously since. James Cayford, who had served with the Royal Engineers during the Second World War and trained under the previous owners, the Lewis family, bought the business in 1959 with his wife Isabelle and brother. His son Alistair joined on leaving school in 1961, and Alistair's son Adrian joined in 1988, giving three generations of the family experience working the counter together for several years. The shop was renovated in 2004 and still trades under the Cayford name, selling beef, pork, lamb, poultry, sausages, bacon, gammon and game described by the business as locally sourced. A telephone ordering and local delivery service runs alongside the shop counter, with orders for Friday delivery required by Thursday lunchtime, and the shop opens six mornings a week.
