Angela Collinson, an art educator with sixteen years in the classroom, set up Clay Space in Melrose Yard off Walmgate as a studio dedicated purely to the potter's wheel, tucked behind her earlier venture, the paint-your-own studio Bish Bash Pot. Ten wheels fill the room, enough for private group bookings as well as regular beginner courses run over three, six, and nine weeks. Graduates of the courses can pay a monthly fee for open studio access, working at the wheel for up to six hours a week with dedicated shelf space to store pieces between firings. Sessions run seven days a week from ten until five. The studio takes both left- and right-handed potters and keeps class sizes small enough for one-to-one guidance through centring and throwing.
