Frinton Summer Theatre is a registered charity and repertory theatre company founded in 1934, staging a summer season each year in the McGrigor Hall on Fourth Avenue in Frinton-on-Sea. It describes itself as the oldest surviving weekly repertory theatre company in England, meaning the resident company rehearses and stages a different production every week through the season rather than running one show for an extended run. The hall is converted into a roughly 200-seat theatre for the season, which runs through the summer months and closes with a large-scale musical staged in a marquee on the Frinton Greensward. Trustees, including the artistic director, are unpaid, and income from ticket sales, sponsorship and donations is put back into funding the following year's season. The company casts professional actors and stage management for each production, distinguishing it from the amateur dramatic societies more common in small English seaside towns.
