Holden Clough Nursery grows hardy plants on the site of the walled kitchen garden of Holden Clough House, established in 1927 by a botanist and plant collector who brought specimens back from expeditions abroad. The family-run nursery still propagates outdoors rather than under polytunnels, raising alpines, herbaceous perennials, ferns and a large range of primulas and hardy geraniums bred to withstand the exposed Ribble Valley climate. Its catalogue includes plants descended from the original owner's collecting trips alongside newer introductions, and the nursery has won gold medals at the Southport Flower Show. Visitors can walk the frame yard and adjoining beds, buy plants on site or by mail order, and get advice from nursery staff. Holden Clough sits near Bolton-by-Bowland in the Forest of Bowland and remains independently owned rather than part of a garden centre chain. It opens seasonally, with reduced days over winter.
