Hunter Gatherer opened on Albert Road in September 2016, founded by Brian and Dani after they met working for a footwear company in Medellín, Colombia, where the idea for the café took shape. Brian, a former sneaker designer, runs the espresso bar on an Eagle One machine paired with Mythos and EK43 grinders, rotating single-origin filter coffees from Curve Coffee Roasters, such as a honey-processed El Silencio from Colombia. Dani, an artist, oversees the kitchen and a small boutique of independently designed homeware and clothing at the front of the café. Every dish, from breakfast focaccia to granola and dhal, is made from scratch without animal products, including the bread, mayonnaise and sauces. The café doubles as a community space, hosting a weekly chess evening on Wednesdays and a vinyl listening session on Saturdays, alongside occasional poetry and craft meet-ups.
