Kilda Cruises has run boat trips from Leverburgh in South Harris out to the St Kilda archipelago since 2005, using its vessel Hirta for the crossing to islands roughly forty miles into the Atlantic. The trip typically runs as a long day excursion, weather permitting, taking in the abandoned village on Hirta, its sea-bird colonies and the sea stacks of Stac Lee and Stac an Armin. The operator also runs shorter trips around the Sound of Harris and to the Monach Isles when St Kilda sailings are not possible. It holds a Scottish Tourist Board five-star rating and has been featured by National Geographic and Visit Outer Hebrides. Sailings depend on sea conditions and run through the spring-to-autumn season, with advance booking needed given the small number of crossings each week and the limited passenger capacity of the boat.
