Loch-an-Eilein Pottery sits on the Rothiemurchus Estate on the road down to Loch an Eilein, a few miles from Aviemore in the Cairngorms. Penny Weir has thrown and fired pottery here for decades, working from a summerhouse workshop where visitors can watch pieces being made and, in season, try the wheel themselves. Weir began making pots as a hobby, giving finished pieces to family and friends, and started selling once demand outgrew what she could give away. The range runs to mugs, bowls, jugs and decorative pieces, each hand-thrown and glazed on site; visitors can also paint a blank piece, which Weir then fires and posts out roughly six weeks later. The pottery opens daily from Easter through October and closes over winter. It operates as a one-woman workshop rather than a retail outlet with outside suppliers, with stock limited to what Weir throws and fires herself, sold only from the site or by post.
