Steffan Huws began roasting coffee in a cwt at the bottom of his garden in 2013, having picked up the habit while living in the El Poblado district of Medellín a decade earlier. The name splices the Welsh word for people, pobl, with the Spanish poblado, meaning settlement. Sion joined in 2016 as demand outgrew the garden shed, and the pair moved their roasters into the old Quarrymen's Barracks at Nantlle, set among slate tips below Snowdon. Poblado now supplies single-origin beans from Uganda, Ethiopia, Colombia and Guatemala to cafes across north Wales, and opens its own courtyard cafe, Caffi Rhosty, on summer Saturdays, alongside a weekend running club, Poblado Plodders, that meets from the same yard.
