Root One occupies a site on the High Road between Wallingford and Didcot, run as an independent garden centre and café since it opened in June 2001 under director Jeremy Brudenell. The plant centre stocks bedding plants, perennials, roses, trees and shrubs alongside tools, compost and outdoor living products, set around four show gardens visitors can walk through for inspiration before buying. The attached café serves breakfasts, sandwiches and hot meals cooked from locally sourced ingredients, along with homemade cakes and Italian-style coffee, in a room overlooking the site's greenhouses. Trade continues year-round with extended Saturday café hours to catch weekend gardeners. Free parking and views toward the Chilterns round out a stop aimed as much at plant buyers as at anyone wanting a sit-down lunch.
