Vines were first planted at Brightwell in the late 1980s, on land a mile north of Wallingford towards Shillingford, overlooking the Thames. The current owners took over in 2000 and now grow eight grape varieties across 16 acres, including Bacchus, Chardonnay, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir, making white, rosé, red and sparkling wine plus an English brandy in the on-site winery. The International Wine Challenge ranked Brightwell's Pinot Noir among the top five English reds in 2024. The shop opens for wine sales on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with tours and tastings run most weekends between June and August, and sales possible on other days by arrangement at the vineyard house.
