Winterbrook Garden Nurseries occupies a site on the High Road in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, on the edge of Wallingford, that John Cottrell has owned for more than thirty years. In 2018 his daughter Hanna Armitage joined him to formalise the plot as a dedicated peat-free plant nursery, and the pair have run it together since. The nursery grows and sells herbaceous perennials alongside gifts and garden antiques, and is listed as a supplier through the Grown In England directory of domestic growers. It operates without a cafe or restaurant attached, focused solely on plants and outdoor sundries rather than a destination retail format. Opening hours are Wednesday to Friday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm, and Saturday 10am to 5pm; the nursery is closed Monday and Tuesday. As a two-person, family-owned operation on a single plot rather than a multi-site garden centre chain, it represents a smaller-scale model of plant retail than the larger destination centres found elsewhere in the area.
