The Dutch Garden Centre trades from Maes-y-Bryn Road at the Cardiff Gate roundabout in Pontprennau, on the eastern edge of the city. Jaap Deen, a nurseryman from the Netherlands, established the business over four decades ago; his daughter Lisa and son-in-law Gary now run it day to day, with his grandson Sam working alongside them as a third generation. The centre imports flowering shrubs and bulbs from Dutch and Italian growers and also sources trees, hedging and bedding plants grown in Wales, describing itself as one of the largest stockists of trees, shrubs and conifers in south Wales. There is no attached restaurant or gift hall; a coffee machine serves visitors instead. Staff, several of them qualified horticulturists, give planting advice on site and will visit customers' gardens to recommend species. The business has no other branches and operates from this single site next to junction 30 of the M4.
