When Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward opened The Glasgow Distillery in 2012, they made single malt in the city for the first time in over a hundred years — the last Glasgow malt distillery having closed generations earlier. It sits, unglamorously and honestly, on an industrial estate at Hillington, and is independently owned, built with private backing rather than a multinational's money. It filled its first cask in 2015 and marked ten years of maturing whisky in 2025, alongside a growing range of gin. A genuinely independent Glasgow distillery, quietly rebuilding a tradition the city had lost. The whisky is worth seeking out; the story is worth knowing.
