Peter Lavery drove buses in Belfast for eleven years before winning the lottery on 18 May 1997, taking home close to ten million pounds. A teetotaller who says he has never tasted whiskey, Lavery pursued an earlier plan to distil spirit at Crumlin Road Gaol before settling on Thompson Dock, the graving dock where the Titanic was fitted out. Titanic Distillers opened in 2023 inside the dock's historic pumphouse, built on what the company calls a floating mezzanine distillery floor. Visitors can descend 67 steps into the dry dock itself as part of the longer tour options. The company is registered with Companies House NI as Titanic Distillers Limited, company number NI655098. Tours run daily from 10am to 6pm, with the last admission at 5pm.
