Eastside Projects was founded in 2007 by artists Simon Bloor, Tom Bloor, Celine Condorelli, Ruth Claxton, James Langdon and Gavin Wade, opening to the public on Heath Mill Lane in September 2008 with the exhibition This Is the Gallery and the Gallery Is Many Things. It operates as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, run by artists rather than a commercial owner, and holds National Portfolio Organisation status with Arts Council England in partnership with Birmingham City University. The gallery occupies a single former industrial unit in Digbeth, showing contemporary art exhibitions alongside a public programme of talks and events, and treats the building itself as part of each show it hosts. It remains based solely at its original Heath Mill Lane address, free to enter and unconnected to any other gallery site.
