Gay's the Word opened on Marchmont Street in Bloomsbury in 1979 and is the UK's oldest LGBT+ bookshop — a staff-run independent that has been a community landmark for decades, from the miners'-support days dramatised in the film Pride to a present-day queue-round-the-block resurgence. It stocks the widest LGBT+ range in the country and functions as a meeting place as much as a shop. A genuine piece of social history that is also just a very good bookshop. Go in, browse, and feel the weight of the place.
