Karen Hanvidge trained in ceramics design at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2011, before setting up her own studio in Renfrew. She builds functional and decorative pieces using a slab-building method with her own paper templates rather than a wheel, working mainly in stoneware and porcelain and firing everything in an electric kiln at the studio. The Paisley Pattern is a constant reference point in her work, and she designs her own ceramic decals to carry that motif onto mugs, bowls and dishes. Alongside her studio practice she teaches slab-building classes for adults and children, including sessions at Paisley Museum and summer schools at the Art Department in Paisley, introducing beginners to template-based construction before more complex forms. Finished work sells through her own shop and at craft fairs across the region.
