The Savoy opened on Heaton Moor Road in 1923 as a Baroque-fronted picture house seating 814, survived a fire in 1938, and closed for a full refurbishment before reopening as a single-screen boutique cinema in October 2015. It is owned by the Mundin family, who also run two similarly small cinemas in Derbyshire and Leicestershire. The auditorium keeps its original plasterwork and red-brick facade while adding 4K digital projection, a licensed bar and sofa seating for two. Programming mixes new releases with art-house and foreign-language films, screened to an audience that includes people who remember watching films there as children. Tickets are bought at a small counter inside the original lobby rather than a multiplex-style kiosk. It sits among the shops of Heaton Moor's village-style high street, a few minutes from Heaton Chapel station.
