Skeleton Records has traded from Oxton Road in Birkenhead since 1972, when it was founded by John Weaver and John Poole, who spotted a gap in the market after noticing Birkenhead had no proper record shop of its own. Weaver, known to regulars as 'Man', packed in his job at the TSB to take on the cheap premises next to a printer's, originally selling posters, incense and second-hand books alongside vinyl. The shop's name comes from a line in a Syd Barrett song. Weaver remained closely involved with the shop until his death in January 2022, and the business he built continues trading today, with around two hundred thousand new and secondhand records, CDs and cassettes in stock across every genre from indie to jazz and metal.
