The Beer Emporium occupies a Grade II listed basement on King Street that once stored wine for J.R. Phillips and Co, Bristol's oldest wine merchant, before opening as a craft beer bar in July 2013. Eighty days of building work turned the bare basement into the bar that regulars now call the Emp, with a bottle shop upstairs that took Best South West Retailer honours at the Celebrate British Beer Awards in 2014. The list runs from local Bristol brewers to Belgian imports, and since 2015 the space has shared its kitchen with Pepenero, a family-run Italian pizzeria that cooks directly off the same bar. It sits in the cluster of historic pubs known locally as the Beermuda Triangle, in Bristol's Old Town, and keeps an underground, cellar-like feel rather than a polished refit.
