Mel and Martin run this freehouse from a stone-built Welsh longhouse dating to the fifteenth century, rescued from dereliction by the Landmark Trust in the 1970s and set on high ground above the Radnor Valley near Presteigne. Two cask ales, sourced from Wye Valley Brewery and other regional micro-breweries, rotate on the bar rather than being tied to a single producer, and the kitchen cooks home-made food from locally sourced ingredients. Six individually decorated bedrooms provide accommodation for overnight guests, and dogs are welcome throughout the building and in the garden, where a picnic area looks out over the valley. The building's age and Grade II listing give it a weight few newer pubs can match. It sits a few miles from Presteigne, close to the Herefordshire border.
