Jazz has played at the sign of Duke Ellington since the first of April 1967 — no joke — and the resident Blue Notes and Severn Jazzmen have held their slots for more than half a century since. Stuart Seydel has been landlord since 2001, keeping free live music seven nights a week with Saturday afternoon and Sunday lunchtime sessions besides, in a Grade II listed house of about 1775 that incorporates a stretch of Bristol's original city wall. It spent years as a managed house for the old brewing combines; today the freehold is recorded as individually held, and the jazz, either way, answers to nobody.
