The Residence Gallery occupies a building at 229 Victoria Park Road, Hackney, run by Toronto-born curator Ingrid Eva Lee Welsh, who founded the project in 2005. It began as an itinerant exhibition space, first inside an abandoned Victorian mental hospital in Whitechapel, then in the Verger's Cottage at St Mary of Eton Church in Hackney Wick, staging more than one hundred shows in its first year. A demolition notice at the church cottage in 2009 prompted the move to Victoria Park Road, where it relaunched under its current name. Welsh's curatorial approach treats each show as a constructed environment, working with wall colour, lighting and sound alongside the art on display. The gallery operates from this single Hackney address, showing contemporary artists without a second site or commercial gallery-group affiliation.
