New Road Hotel occupies a former garment factory on New Road in Whitechapel, designed by architect Hume Victor Kerr and left empty from the factory's closure in 2000 until redevelopment began. Brothers Monsur, Masrur and Moksud Malik took on the disused building in 2011, a project they call personal since their father had worked in the factory, converting it into a 79-room hotel through a multi-million-pound renovation. Original features from the industrial building were kept rather than stripped out: the clocking-in machine now sits above the check-in desk, and salvaged factory flooring forms a feature wall framing the lifts. The hotel remains a single independent property rather than part of a wider group, run by the Malik family. It sits within walking distance of Brick Lane and Whitechapel's markets, on a stretch of New Road lined with former industrial buildings.
