The Palm Tree has been run by the same family since 1977, when Alfred and Valerie Barrett took over the tenancy from Truman's Brewery, buying the freehold outright in 1993 to become an independent free house rather than a tied pub. The current building dates from 1935, designed for Truman's by the pub specialists Eedle and Meyers on the site of an earlier pub that had served wharf and mill workers nearby. Historic England listed it Grade II in 2015, and the interior still keeps two separate bar rooms rather than one knocked-through space. Long-serving barman Alf Barrett, working here since 1976, takes cash at a till dating from the 1960s. The pub sits inside Mile End Park and has appeared as a filming location for the television series Luther.
