Void is Derry's contemporary art gallery, artist-led and run as a charity since a group of the city's artists founded it in 2003. It shows serious, current work — solo exhibitions by Irish and international artists, changing every few months — in two galleries off Waterloo Place, free to walk into. Because it belongs to no commercial interest, it can take the risks a dealer would not, and has become one of the north-west's most respected art spaces on exactly that footing. For a city with a deep visual-art tradition and few large institutions, Void does the work of one: a room where Derry sees the art of its own moment.
