The Consortium opened in a small courtyard off Cornmarket in June 2017, fifty yards from Louth's market place, with its own microbrewery and gin distillery built into the space above the bar. Usually three of the six ales on offer are brewed on site, rotated alongside guest casks from breweries further afield, and the gin shelf has grown alongside the beer list. There is no jukebox, no fruit machine and no television, in keeping with the conversation-first approach that defines the micropub format. Seating is limited to a handful of tables and a bar counter, so busy evenings mean standing room only. The pub is run as an independent free house rather than tied to any pub company, giving it a free hand over which guest ales and gins make it onto the bar.
