The Byrnes have sold wine from Victoria Buildings on King Street since 1879, and the shop shows its work: the original mahogany counter, cellars hewn into the rock below, and stock bought on the family palate for five generations. Andrew Byrne stepped back in 2024 after more than fifty years in the trade, handing the daily running to the cousins Joseph and Kate Byrne — the fourth and fifth generations in harness at once, with four family names still on the company's register. A second premises in the old Victoria Brewery on Shawbridge Street holds the overflow under a brick barrel-vaulted ceiling, disclosed here as the firm's other half. Clitheroe is a small town with a wine merchant of national reputation, and both parties seem happy with the arrangement.
