Henry Poole & Co traces its founding to 1806, when James Poole set up as a military tailor during the Napoleonic Wars, working from premises off Regent Street. His son Henry expanded the business and in 1846 opened a showroom at 15 Savile Row, the first bespoke tailoring house to trade from the street that later took its name from the trade. The firm holds royal warrants and is credited with tailoring the first dinner jacket, cut in the 1860s to a specification from the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. Poole has fitted heads of state and stage performers from the same address for close to two centuries. It remains single-site, run from the Savile Row shop and workshop, with cloth still cut on the premises.
