Peckhamplex occupies a former Sainsbury's supermarket on Rye Lane, converted into a cinema in 1994. Directors Simone Brown, Rakesh Makhecha, Marianne Gray and John Reiss run the six-screen cinema independently, keeping the standard ticket at £6.99 plus a 60p booking fee. The programme mixes new releases with art-house and foreign-language titles, alongside Q&A screenings with visiting directors and actors. Most staff live locally, and pay sits above the Living Wage with bonuses in good years. Southwark Council gave the cinema its Civic Award in 2016, the first time the honour went to an institution rather than an individual, and Time Out has repeatedly named it Best Cinema in its annual awards.
