Cyril Pocklington opened this bakery in 1924, and his grandson Christopher now runs it with his wife Tina from the shop at 2 Market Place, Louth. Its Traditional Plumbread follows a recipe Myra Pocklington used in the 1930s to feed farm workers, who ate it spread with home-churned butter during breaks in the fields; a Luxury version with mixed spice and cherries was added in 1998 after customer requests. The Market Place shop still bakes daily alongside the production site outside town, selling the plum loaf whole or sliced, plus pies, cakes and sweet buns. Plumbread is sent by mail order to customers further afield, but the queue at the counter on a Saturday morning remains the surest way to get it fresh. The business has stayed in the Pocklington family since Cyril founded it.
