The Red Lion stands on the London Road in Ampney St Peter, a few miles east of Cirencester, and is one of only fourteen pubs in the country recorded on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors without a bar counter; drinks are served from a hatch rather than pulled at a bar. The building is Grade II listed and has operated as a pub since at least the early eighteenth century, with only four licensees recorded between 1851 and John Barnard's death in 2014, after which the pub closed. It reopened in May 2023 under new licensees, who kept the original quarry-tiled floors, dado panelling and Stroud Brewery signage intact rather than modernising the rooms. The pub serves North Cotswold Shagweaver and other local real ales rather than a fixed national range. It has no website and is open Thursday to Saturday evenings only, from 5.30pm to 10.30pm, closed the rest of the week. The Red Lion remains a single, independently run freehouse rather than part of any pub company estate.
