Surveyed
The line follows the Tanfield Waggonway of 1725, and the preservation society that runs trains on it was formed in 1977, with passenger services starting on 2 July 1981. It is worked by volunteers under the Friends of Tanfield Railway, the Tanfield Railway Trust and the Tanfield Railway Company. Marley Hill engine shed, where the trains are kept, is claimed by the railway to be the oldest working engine shed in the world; the locomotive Wellington on the line was built in 1873. The railway has taken a Heritage Railway Association annual award and is a VisitEngland Quality Assured Visitor Attraction.
