Alleyn Park Garden Centre opened in 2004 behind Park Hall Road in West Dulwich, founded by two managers who had worked together at another garden centre and set out to run their own. The site and surrounding streets take their name from Edward Alleyn, the Elizabethan actor and founder of Dulwich College, commemorated when Alleyn Park was named in 1877. The centre favours UK-grown stock sourced from small nurseries over imported mass-produced plants, stocking trees, shrubs, climbers, herbaceous perennials and seasonal bedding alongside pots, tools and compost, with a café serving customers browsing the plant houses. Now in its third decade under the same ownership, it remains a single independent site, distinct from the area's larger chain outlets.
