The services that broke the mould: the Westmorland family — who built Tebay on the M6, the original farm-shop services — hold the majority stake, in formal partnership with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, a charity founded by residents of Gloucester's Matson estate in 2007 to turn the motorway into a community asset. The planning application itself renounced chain coffee, fast food and gaming machines; the farmshop and kitchen stock local producers instead, up to threepence in every non-fuel pound — comfortably over half a million a year — goes back into local projects, and Which? named it the UK's best motorway services in 2025. Northbound opened in 2014, southbound the year after. A motorway services, yes — and the least fungible one in Britain.
