Sasha Drennan opened Lindum Books on the Bailgate in 2014, in a former kitchen shop under the cathedral's shadow, having done her market research into the supposed death of the independent bookshop and concluded — correctly, it turns out — that Lincoln would prove the obituaries wrong. Two floors mix new titles with secondhand, the events calendar imports authors at a rate that embarrasses larger cities, and the British Book Awards have named it the Eastern region's best independent bookshop. Uphill Lincoln keeps its Roman name in this shop's sign and its reading habits at this shop's till.
