Newry did without an independent bookshop until October 2025, when Anthony Reavey and his daughter Niamh opened The Bookshelf on Monaghan Street — five weeks, by their account, after an off-the-cuff remark turned into a signed lease inside a day. It is a family-run shop, ordering through the Irish and British book trade, running to author events and a book club, and giving the town the independent bookseller it had gone without. New, but the kind of new a place needs.
