Workshop Wales Gallery began in 1970 when John and Lel Cleal opened a studio and shop at Lowertown, on the edge of Fishguard, after John, a painter and sculptor born in South Africa, left the country with his family following the Sharpeville shootings of 1960. The gallery grew into a hub for craft and fine art across Wales, at one stage running branches in Cardiff and London, before settling at its current countryside site at Manorowen. It now holds work from more than forty Welsh and national artists across ceramics, painting and sculpture, and is run by Geno Cleal, John's grandson, making it a three-generation family business. The gallery opens Tuesday to Saturday, eleven until four, from the end of March to the end of October, and closes over winter.
