Cambridge's oldest wholefood shop has been a workers' co-operative since 1970 — three people at the start, and to this day fully and equally owned by whoever works there, everyone on the same pay with the same say. Mill Road grew its reputation as the city's most interesting street around anchors like this: bulk grains, organic veg, the refill economy practised decades before it had a name, and a warehouse arm supplying the region's co-ops besides. Fifty-six years of collective grocering, conducted without a boss and largely without fuss.
