Bilgin Soylu founded Kiln Cambridge in 2018 as an open-access studio on Ditton Walk in the Abbey area of the city. The space holds 20 pottery wheels, three electric kilns, a gas-fired kiln and a small Raku kiln, among the better-equipped independent studios in the country. Beginners can book a two-and-a-half-hour taster session or work through four or eight-week courses, while working potters join as members for seven-day access. Soylu describes the studio as a place where people interact rather than work in isolation, and several students have gone on to take up membership and sell work locally. The studio runs seven days a week, opening latest on weekdays until 9.30pm and shortest on Sundays, 11am to 6pm.
