Herefordshire farmer Stephen Dale founded Canwood Gallery after his own experience of contemporary art as a source of comfort during leukaemia treatment at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London in the 1970s, when regular visits to Tate Gallery, including Carl Andre's brick installation, left a lasting impression on him. On retiring from farming he set up this contemporary art space and outdoor sculpture park in the Herefordshire countryside at Checkley, incorporating the venture as a company in August 2024. The gallery shows paintings, sculpture, prints, glass and mixed media by established and local artists, alongside a cafe, with free admission throughout. Canwood Gallery operates from this single Checkley site, with no other venues elsewhere.
