Stephen and Carol Grieve founded Crail Pottery in 1965, taking on a pair of derelict buildings in the town and teaching themselves to throw and fire pottery while living on site in a caravan. Carol died in 2019; Stephen still works there alongside their children Sarah and Ben Grieve, Ben's wife Jane, and grandson Timothy, making it a three-generation workshop. Every piece, from terracotta planters to raku and hand-painted earthenware, is thrown on the wheel, decorated, glazed and fired on the Nethergate premises. Visitors can walk through the working areas, browse the showroom and sit in the courtyard behind the shop. Crail Pottery opens all year, seven days a week, and sells nothing that was not made on site.
